Over the course of the next week, Lumosity plans to unlock the Insight for its free members, as well. The Insight analyzes subscribers’ performance on Train of Thought, calculating their planning scores and providing personalized, actionable pointers for mastering the game. In addition to providing new and free players with unlimited access to Train of Thought, the company has also released a new Train of Thought Insight for subscribers. “Even as we’ve expanded Lumosity to include Math and Vocabulary categories, Train of Thought remains the standard by which we measure our work.” ![]() “Train of Thought’s success hinges on its quality of being simultaneously challenging and rewarding, and it was designed with Bushnell’s Law in mind: easy to learn, difficult to master,” said Berkowitz. ![]() According to an analysis from the Lumosity Data Science team, Train of Thought is especially popular among women, who also exhibit stronger planning skills in the game. Within a week of its initial release, Train of Thought became the program’s most popular game, a status it has generally maintained since. The game has 14 levels, and an analysis by the Lumosity research team found that Train of Thought also challenges planning skills: the ability to plan ahead is correlated with players’ likelihood of advancing to a higher level. Divided attention refers to the ability to simultaneously respond to multiple tasks or task demands, and the game asks players to direct an increasingly fast stream of trains to their corresponding stations. Our goal with Insights is to make Lumosity training more personal and engaging through data, or as our CEO explained, “Our cognitive Insights aim to be the smart coach who has analyzed your gameplay across time and can offer you better input and direction each time you play.” At launch, we released three Insights: Game Strengths, Monthly Gains and Drops, and a speed versus accuracy analysis for Ebb and Flow. We launched Lumosity Insights in November to provide our subscribers with an in-depth look at their gameplay and training patterns. It remains to be seen whether results like this one will also generalize to other games, but the data science team looks forward to conducting similar analyses for our other games. Although overall efficiency is very high - over 90% on average - women held a significant edge over men here as well. They also analyzed how efficient people are by counting the rate of redundant, unhelpful actions in the game. For instance, the team noticed that, overall, women are better planners than men - their analyses showed that the difference was small, but statistically reliable. The Insight updates in near real-time, so you’ll be able to test different tactics and get immediate feedback, too.ĭuring their analyses, the data science team observed some other interesting trends in our Train of Thought data. The Insight also includes a more in-depth look at what we mean by planning and tips for how you can plan more efficiently to raise your scores the next time you play. The Insight will analyze your gameplay and tell you how strong your Train of Thought planning skills are, as well as how they compare to other users. Subscribers can unlock the new Insight after playing Train of Thought eight times. In their analyses, our data scientists found that planning skills are directly correlated with overall game score on Train of Thought.
